Supplying a range of metal products, including alloys and other materials, a manufacturer looking to reduce and reuse their aluminium production waste contacted Fercell.
During the process of aluminium rod coiling, once a coil gets to the correct weight, the ‘tails’, which can be up to 2 metres long, are cut off for scrap before the process starts over again on a new coil. This leaves a significant amount of production waste.
By exploring the opportunities of size reduction equipment for aluminium waste, the client can benefit not only from a reduced volume of onsite waste and lower disposal costs but the option to reintroduce any waste material back into the manufacturing process.
Reducing and Utilising Production Waste
The solution, a 450DDX Scrap Chopper, offers a compact solution that processes any aluminium rod scraps swiftly and efficiently. The scrap chopper is mounted on a custom stand, fully guarded with an interlocked opening door to fit the customer supplied bin containers.
Upgraded from the standard model, the 450DDX features a 1.1kW 400V three-phase motor, heavier cutting tools, and a bespoke feed matrix.
Scrap chopper material can be manually fed, de-spooled from a reel, or installed into a production line. The volume of waste material produced will often determine how the scrap chopper is operated. In this case, 10mm aluminium rods are manually fed.
The cutting length of the material can be adjusted using different knife configurations to suit material requirements, with a standard cut length size of approximately 76mm.
Operation is simple with a 1.1kW 400V three-phase DOL starter and e-stop. Its large feed opening allows multiple aluminium rods to be loaded simultaneously, with an additional mechanical brake to halt material feed if necessary. Once processed, any material is collected in the removable bin, allowing material to be easily emptied once full. Alternative collection options, such as a bag or box, are also available.
Once the aluminium rods have been reduced in size, the output is smelted for reintroduction in the manufacturing process of new product.
With a range of SWEED scrap choppers available, there’s equipment to suit the smallest to most demanding of applications. The industrial series of scrap choppers provide a size reduction solution for heavy-duty end-of-life materials, such as steel, aluminium and copper rods or tubing, and telecommunication cables. High volume scrap choppers are perfect for larger amounts of steel banding, bailing wire, light cables, and PET plastic strapping.
