New local exhaust ventilation (LEV) systems have been installed to support multiple CNC machines for a UK-based manufacturer of electromechanical components and enclosures.

Offering a range of tailored solutions, the manufacturer uses precision CNC machining to customise plastic enclosures.  The process enables modifications to suit each customer’s specific design and functional requirements.

Relocating to larger premises and adding more CNC machines necessitated an upgraded industrial ventilation system capable of serving seven CNC point-to-point machine tools producing custom plastic enclosures.

Previously, the workshop had relied on multiple small extraction units.  Although effective for single machines, such units are not always the most practical or efficient solution for more demanding centralised LEV systems covering multiple machine tools.

The CNC machining inevitably generates substantial amounts of dust, which must be captured and extracted by a ventilation system to ensure compliance with COSHH regulations and HSE guidance HSG258.

Industrial Dust Extraction Solution

The solution comprises two SHK bag-emptying filter units connected through a close-coupled duct system. This configuration allows all dust-generating production machinery to be linked, capturing, transporting, and collecting particulates at a centralised point.

The SHK series provides an economical and efficient method for controlling dust chips and particles from multiple CNC machines.

While these units are installed internally, the filter enclosure, constructed from heavy-gauge galvanised steel, makes the SHK series suitable for outdoor placement.

Each SHK unit comprises three primary components: the filter housing, collection arrangement, and centrifugal fan set.

The filter housing contains heavy-duty multi-filament filter media, which traps dust on the loop pile to form a primary layer that enhances filtration efficiency. The automatic filter-cleaning mechanism further improves performance by completing a cleaning cycle each time the system stops.

Dust and chips are collected in standard plastic collection sacks with a quick-release mechanism for easy removal and replacement. Alternatively, the units can be fitted with either ‘cam-lock’ collection bins or automatic discharge system, featuring a motorised screw conveyor and rotary airlock for continuous waste removal with minimal operator input.

The centrifugal fans feature high-efficiency radial-bladed impellers made from heavy-gauge plate steel, statically and dynamically balanced for stable, vibration-free operation. Designed to extract and transport medium- to heavy-weight dust particles, the open radial-blade design accommodates a wide range of waste types.

Following installation, the system underwent a thorough examination and performance test by a BOHS P-series qualified technician, confirming full compliance with COSHH regulations. Supporting the expanded CNC machinery and enhanced workshop capabilities, the upgraded industrial ventilation system provides a centralised solution for dust and fume removal, ultimately ensuring a safer working environment.
