Looking to expand production capabilities, a mechanical engineering services provider contacted Fercell to install a ventilation solution for dust and spray from production processes.

Carrying out a variety of engineering services onsite, including gearbox refurbishment, fabrication services, and pump services, additional local exhaust ventilation systems were required for expansion of services carried out onsite.

Encompassing a variety of services, there was a requirement for spray extraction for various spraying processes, in addition to a dust extraction solution specifically for grinding processes.

Flexible Spray Extraction

Large, heavy objects are often brought in and moved around the building by overhead crane, meaning a solution for spray extraction needed to be flexible and accommodate parts lowered in place from above.

The solution, a ‘SIROCCO’ dry-back spray booth with an electrically operated retractable roof, provides unhindered lifting of products in and out of the booth using an overhead crane. Post-lifting operation, the roof of the spray booth can be quickly and easily closed using a remote control module. Enclosing the spraying operations improves the system performance to achieve optimum capture and control while minimising energy consumption.

The spray booth is essential for the capture and containment of overspray and emissions from the spraying activities carried out onsite and is appropriate for a variety of materials, including adhesives, lacquers, and paints. It utilises a BDA fan-set, where the electric motor and transmission are situated outside the airstream, to deliver effective extraction at low noise levels.

The overspray and particulate are drawn into and filtered through a pleated filter, where contaminants are removed from the extracted air, before being exhausted to the atmosphere via close-coupled ducting terminating with a high-flux discharge cowl.

Extraction of Grinding Dust

Grinding processes inevitably create dust. While this is unavoidable, by employing a suitable engineering control the dust can be removed from the source.

Installation of a Fercell ‘METASPIRE’ grinding booth eliminates dust generated by grinding processes. Due to the filtration technology employed, the METASPIRE series of booths are suitable for other processes, including sanding and welding operations.

It’s equipped with multi-bank filtration technology, including impaction, metallic, and aluminised polyester filter cartridges, optimised with a pulse-jet compressed air filter cleaning system. The self-contained, standalone booth deposits material in collection drawers located at the base of the booth, making cleaning quick and easy.

The METASPIRE booth has been specified to meet the project requirements, including size requirements and fan type to suit. In this case, the unit features an integral, attenuated, centrifugal fan, which ensures complete face velocity across the full booth.

Expansion of local exhaust ventilation systems onsite has allowed services to be carried out efficiently and effectively, whilst adhering to COSHH regulations and ultimately providing a safe working environment.
