Production waste from woodworking doesn’t have to mean high disposal costs. Waste wood often has the potential to be reused as a biomass resource.
For a UK furniture manufacturer, a high volume of accumulated waste wood from product offcuts, rejected product and various machining processes offered the opportunity to explore a size reduction system that would break down waste into useful wood chips for use as biomass fuel.
Shredding wood offers a number of benefits, including reducing your waste disposal costs, freeing up valuable onsite space that would otherwise be used for waste storage, the opportunity to reduce onsite heating costs with wood chips processed in a biomass heater, and the potential for further processing of wood chips into briquettes, which are denser and burn for longer than standard wood chips.
The WEIMA WLK range of single-shaft shredders efficiently process wood waste, breaking it down to a fraction of its original size, whilst achieving a homogeneous output size. This is essential for the utilisation of wood chip heating systems.
Wood Waste to Resource
The Fercell installed solution includes a WEIMA WLK6s single-shaft shredder with infeed belt conveyor and an outfeed chain conveyor, which delivers the output to an external storage silo.

The WEIMA WLK6s single-shaft shredder with a rotor length of 800mm effortlessly processes waste wood, achieving wood chips of >20mm. The shredder also offers an interchangeable screen, meaning this can be easily swapped or replaced should the material requirements change to achieve a smaller or larger output size.
Placement of the shredder outdoors is no issue with offset bearings protecting against dust or contaminants. Furthermore, to accommodate the height of the chain conveyor, the WEIMA WLK6s machine frame has been also been raised.
Shredded wood waste is transported through the chain conveyor where material is channelled directly into an external silo. This material then feeds a biomass heating system.
The chain conveyor configuration constructed from galvanised steel features a robust design using both horizontal and inclined conveying of up to 90°, providing an efficient solution for transporting material across a long distance.
Maintenance of the chain conveyor is straightforward with large access hatches, externally mounted bearing housings, geared drive, and drive assemblies, enabling quick access if required.
With waste wood produced daily the WEIMA WLK6s efficiently shreds bulky waste to be used as biomass, reducing onsite waste disposal costs and providing a sustainable solution for waste management.
